What is happening on the far-right? Political Extremism in Europe

When looking at individual instances of far-right successes in Europe, it can seem like a fragmented or even new phenomenon. But if you zoom out, the messages, political styles and goals of far-right movements across Europe suggest wider long-term trends and strategies of political communication which are particularly difficult to counteract. It is arguable that politics of the 'centre' and government of coalitions have contributed to a polarisation at the political edges where alternatives are being proposed to the stagnant status quo. The far right alternatives are dangerous as they are racist, sexist, xenophobic and propose a closed mindedness. As nationalism makes yet another re-emergence across the European continent, is populism a strategy which might also work for its opponents?
